Mad for Macarons

We tasted these delicate treats from the super-posh to the supermarket

-

1 English Rose Bakery Chocolate Orange, £6 for 5

These pack a huge punch, thanks to the really generous filling. Oozing with ganache, the macaron had a lovely crisp outer layer with a chewy bite and a subtle orange flavour. Yum!

2 English Rose Bakery Mango & Passion Fruit, £6 for 5

The flavour on this was much more delicate, but there was almost a warmth coming from the mango with a floral note from the passion fruit. The texture of the macaron was great with a gooey, fruity filling that really hit the right note.

3 Morrisons French Shimmered Macarons, £3.50 for 12

These were small but pretty, with a shimmery surface. Very moist, but the filling is quite jelly like and the flavours disappointingly subtle. They almost taste a bit more like biscuits. A case of style over substance.

4 Betty’s Macaroons, £16 for six

Light and moist with a lovely punch of flavour from the buttercream, ganache and pate de fruit. They’re dangerously light – you feel like you can keep popping them in your mouth at a waistline-expanding rate.

5 Pierre Hermé Assortment Of 7 Macarons, £18

Gooey fillings with unusual but yummy flavour combos. The chocolate and passion fruit was just intense enough, while the liquorice and violet flavour much more subtle. Very special, but you’re sure paying for it.

6 M&S Dessert Menu Mini Macarons, £6 for 12

Quite dry and lacking in flavour. The raspberry ones had more of a zing, but the Belgian chocolate and vanilla French almond were on the bland side.

7 Waitrose Les Delices de Rose Macarons, £4 for 12

Soft and squidgy with plenty of filling and a lovely crisp shell. The flavour is just intense enough, too. A really great treat for a not-too-shabby price.
