Skinny vs straight: jeans for every shape and size

Style Ed Laura on the jeans styles to buy now

-

Whether you’re a die-hard skinny fan or a lover of relaxed styles, the high street really does have the best affordable denim around. So this season, I am putting two key styles to the test: straight leg vs skinny jeans. And, no matter what your body shape or size, both of these styles will work for you (and I don’t say that very often).

STYLES TO SUIT YOU

If you’re curvier on the bottom half, try a style with stretch and a higher waist, to eliminate that annoying gap between the waistband and your back.

Want to lengthen legs? Go for an ankle grazer – the skin on show will trick the eye to make legs appear longer. Winner!

If you’re shorter in the body, try a mid-rise style, whereas if you have a longer torso, highwaisted will balance out proportions.

Thicker thighs? A little stretch goes a long way. But, remember, there’s a fine line between a great fit and too much give. Ensure your jeans aren’t too stretchy at first, as they’ll lose shape quickly.

CUSTOMISE

Got an old pair of jeans you want to reinvent? Fray the hems or add rips at the knee, to give them a new lease of life.

Cutting the hem of your jeans to create a raw edge (and snip off a few inches) is a fave trick of Kimmy K’s – perfect for petite girls.

Personalisation is still a huge trend – add patches or letters to give your jeans a more luxe feel without a hefty price tag.

SHOPPING TIPS

Always try before you buy – fabric and styles differ so much between shops. Don’t worry about what size you go for – there is little to no standardisation when it comes to sizing on the high street. The fit is more important than what it says on the label. Be aware that denim always gives. Your jeans should be super-snug when you first buy them (almost to the point of not being able to do them up), so you can allow for the fabric to wear in.
