The brilliant The Affair returns to our screens

SKY ATLANTIC & NOW TV, TUESDAY 26 JUNE, 9PM

- Kay Ribeiro

Of all the shows we’ve been excited about returning, The Affair is top of the list. With its breathtaking scenery, flawed-yet-relatable characters and the didn’t-see-it-coming twists, we can’t get enough of the Golden Globe-winning show. If you’ve somehow missed out on this televisual treat, we urge you to catch up on Sky immediately. Safe to say, we were hooked on series one because of the extraordinary talent of its stellar cast. Dominic West infuriated as Noah Solloway, whose affair with troubled soul Alison Lockhart (Ruth Wilson) devastated both his wife Helen (Maura Tierney) and Alison’s husband Cole (Joshua Jackson). Series two then dealt with the gut-wrenching fallout of their betrayal, while also solving the gripping mystery of who killed Cole’s brother Scotty. And series three was the bump in an otherwise perfect road, introducing Noah’s French lover Juliette, with all her emotional baggage (most of which we didn’t really care about) and shifting the action to Paris, with frankly lukewarm results. So, will season four return to the proven successful ‘fab four’ formula?

WHAT’S IN STORE?

Happily, the action seemingly once again revolves around Noah and co, and still uses the fantastic, multi-pov storytelling that makes your sympathies flip on the turn of a dime. As it kicks off, sworn enemies Noah and Cole have come together as Alison has worryingly gone AWOL. Noah has moved to LA to be near his kids – with Helen seemingly sabotaging his efforts. Meanwhile, she’s mystifingly on the edge, despite having it all in a successful surgeon partner (Vik) and totally lust-worthy life.

THE VERDICT

A return to form. From the opening chords of the stirring theme tune, Affair fans will be hooked again.
