We take a fitness cruise in Norway’s fjords with Frankie and Wayne Bridge

We tagged along on hols with Frankie and Wayne Bridge to find out why they are #fitfam goals

The couple that trains together, stays together, right? But with busy careers and two young kids, it’s hard for husband-and-wife team Frankie and Wayne Bridge to squeeze it all in. So, they merged quality time together with the chance to try out wall climbing, kayaking and some impressive-looking strength exercises during an action-packed cruise through the Norwegian fjords.

Unluckily for them, we were there right there with them, totally checking on their double downward dog action…

How different is this to your usual holidays – would you normally be hitting the gym while you’re away?

Frankie: This is really different. Normally, the only active holiday that we do is snowboarding. This was a big change to go away without the kids [sons Parker, four, and Carter, two] and to be up and about. This is the first time we’ve been on a cruise and it was nice to be active instead of sitting around by the pool.

Wayne: Well, I am always active on holiday – I just struggle to get Frankie involved sometimes.

F: It doesn’t feel like you’re working out all the time, more like you’re doing activities.

Do you work harder when you exercise together?

F: It’s always Wayne who motivates us to work out, to be honest. Once I’ve done it, I feel good, but before, I kind of dread it. Wayne is on it every day, as it’s what he is used to. I have a trainer, otherwise I will slack off.

W: When we are working out, she likes to talk and she gets distracted.

Frankie: It’s a chance to socialise, too.

What are your usual fitness regimes like at home?

F: I go to the gym and do Pilates. Wayne tends to work out at home. Sometimes, he joins me at the gym. It’s nice being away just the two of us – because the kids weren’t there, we could plan our itinerary.

W: I probably join Frankie at the gym once a week. A lot of it is juggling it around the kids and squeezing it in when I can. We are into our health and nutrition, but we don’t do it to an extreme. We are happy to go and have a cocktail and a bit of food as well.

Do you argue while you work out, like most couples would?

F: When we were kayaking, we did argue a bit because I wasn’t doing it right and Wayne wasn’t that impressed with my skills. He kept telling me what to do.

W: She was supposed to be the captain in charge of steering and her steering was terrible. We did well as a team. It was so beautiful and there was so much to see. It was a proper workout.

Do you ever wear matching activewear?

F: No! Unless you count wearing black as matching. Although I think Wayne looks great in a pair of leggings. I know that is a bit weird.

W: Just leggings? Don’t worry – I don’t wear leggings all the time!

Who is the most likely to break first and suggest you head to the bar for an Aperol Spritz?

F: Me! If we are working out together, I will have worked up a little sweat in 20 minutes doing a round of the gym. He’ll be on the same piece of machinery sweating buckets and he’s still got the rest of the equipment to do.

Your hol looks amazing – is it important you do new and different things together?

F: We used to back in the day, but we don’t really get the chance now. It was a nice experience to be able to do that. Wall climbing was fun and really hard. I did enjoy the kayaking, but it’s only good in really pretty locations.

Can anyone cram fitness into their busy lives? What would be your top tips?

W: It’s about getting it out of the way earlier or squeezing it in when the kids are at nursery. The boys both join in a bit if I am working out at home, but then that means the workout tends to go out of the window in the end.

What sort of activities do you do with the kids?

W: We do a lot of swimming. They love their bikes and their scooters, and I take them to a little park down the road. I would love to get them into snowboarding , and into kayaking when they’re a bit older.

Who does the cooking?

F: Wayne! W: God knows why. I am the worst cook out the both of us, but it has worked out that way. I think a lot of the stuff Frankie cooks probably takes the most time and with the

kids, it’s harder. I like making everyone breakfast, but for the most part, it is stir-frys or fajitas or a bit of fish and veg really. F: I do a good roast dinner. W: Once every three years. Marella Cruises invited Frankie and Wayne Bridge to create their own Marella By U health and fitness itinerary based on their personal interests, proving that keeping shipshape onboard is a breeze.
