Kate nets herself a dream vacay

- Katie Holloway

When you’ve got a four-year-old son, it’s not that easy to have a romantic, relaxing break away with your partner. So, instead, Kate Winslet got stuck in with all the beach activities while on holiday in Menorca with Titanic clearly didn’t put her off the water her husband Ned Rocknroll and their son Bear Blaze.

And while Kate, 42, may have made her name by hanging on to that door for dear life after the Titanic sunk, this time around, she seemed to be a little more at ease in the sea. Donning a pair of goggles and holding on tight to a fishing net, Kate and Bear were clearly on a sea creature hunting mission.

Kate also made sure to make time for a quick PDA session with her husband of six years, although her floppy beach hat was firmly in place to keep everything PG for poor Bear.

While Ned’s surname might not be the most traditional – changed because he thought we all “took ourselves too seriously” – his first meeting with Kate was even more bizarre.

Ned, who is Richard Branson’s nephew, was holidaying on Necker Island at the same time as the actress when a house fire broke out. In a story that has now become legendary, Kate helped Branson’s 90-year-old mother escape the burning house.

There’s nothing like a tragedy to bring people together. Ned, 40, and Kate began dating not long after, and married in 2012 in a small ceremony in New York. Rumour has it Leonardo Dicaprio gave the bride away. Swoon.

Baby Bear (not that one) was born a year later, and the quirky couple decided to give him a name as a nod to how his parents met.

“Bear’s second name is Blaze because my husband and I met in a house fire, basically. The house burned down and we survived,” said Kate, who’s also mum to Mia, 17, from her first marriage to Jim Threapleton and Joe, 14, from her second to director Sam Mendes. “But we wanted something of the fire, and so Blaze was the name we came up with. Bear Blaze.”
