Tom & Lance: ‘We want 11 more kids’
The first-time dads are planning a BIG brood
Tom Daley is spending a lot less time at the swimming pool and a lot more time sterilising bottles these days. The 24 year old and his filmmaker husband Dustin Lance Black, 44, welcomed their first child – a son called Robbie – in June this year, after using a surrogate. And chatting to heat Radio, it’s clear they are loving dad life… How have you both taken to nappy duties? Tom: I had never changed a nappy before in my entire life until our child.
Lance: Is that true? That was the first one you’d ever changed? I had no idea, you did it very well! T: Thank you, I’m a quick learner. L: I grew up in a Mormon family – by age six, you were expected to pitch in and help change nappies. But they’ve changed massively. People who have kids now are so lucky compared to when I used to change my little brother’s diaper. It was a bit of a disaster. Every time, I’d be like, “What am I about to confront?” Have you already been thinking about baby number two? T: Before you become parents, you do think about the future and how many you’d want to have. But now we have a nineweek-old baby, it’s like, “Let’s see how it goes with Robbie…”
L: I’m already on baby number 12! Baby two is already raised and in college in my mind…
T: He wants a football team – with a reserve.
L: Or a family band! Like the Brady Bunch. You’ve decided not to employ a nanny – how will you split your workloads with parenting?
L: Robbie’s going to be the youngest diver ever – he’ll beat Tom’s record. He’s going to dive in Tokyo at two years old.
T: Luckily, Lance is a filmmaker – my office isn’t as portable as his. I don’t have a diving pool in the garden, so Lance often has Robbie sitting next to him while he works at home. I’m back in training now – I’ll be up at 6am, probably feed Robbie, go train, then come back at 4.30pm and take that shift while Lance carries on working.
L: I’m really lucky, I’m mostly just sitting at my laptop and Robbie’s great as a writing partner. He doesn’t give me any criticism.
