Coleen and Wayne Bored in the USA

Things aren’t going well across the Atlantic

It sounds exciting, completely upending your life and moving to a whole different continent – but there’s always a risk you won’t actually like your new normal. And just weeks after abandoning the UK for Washington DC, Coleen and Wayne Rooney are realising just that. The pair have told friends they’re – whisper it – kind of bored in the new city, thousands of miles away from friends and loved ones, and are already starting to regret their decision.

“They’re both climbing the walls and missing so much about their old life,” says an insider close to the childhood sweethearts, who are parents to sons Kai, eight, Klay, five, Kit, two and Cass, seven months. “Unless you’re interested in politics, Washington DC isn’t exactly the most exciting place in America, and so far they’ve felt a bit out of place. They’ve been trying to tell themselves it’s still early days, but the truth is, Wayne and Coleen are finding it a much tougher transition than they thought it would be.”

The family packed up their Cheshire mansion this summer to pursue Wayne’s international footballing dreams, after he was offered a £300,000-a-week, three-and-a-half year deal with DC United. Coleen, 32, admitted it was going to be hard without her loved ones, saying, “An eight-hour

flight is a long distance. I will miss my family.” And last week, her parents, Tony and Colette Mcloughlin, popped over for a visit, where the group were spotted out shopping and, er, yawning a lot. “Coleen is trying to keep everyone entertained and make sure the kids are happy,” the source continues. “It’s been great having her parents there, but it’s bittersweet because then they leave. She’s complained about feeling lonely and isolated when Wayne is busy with football.

“There is a lot of expectation to make everything perfect, and it feels like she’s spinning all these plates. Her mates are worried she’s putting herself under too much pressure to make it all work.”

The WAG has been pasting on a brave face on Instagram, sharing a series of smiling family shots, including a date night pic with Wayne, and photos of her boys in their uniforms, writing, “First day at school for my boys in America”.

But friends say the big worry isn’t just boredom, it’s Wayne returning to his old tricks. The pair have weathered numerous affair allegations during their 16-year relationship – most recently when Wayne was arrested for drink-driving, with a woman in the passenger seat, while Coleen was pregnant with Cass. We’re told, “What’s really worrying Coleen is the idea that her husband is restless when he’s not on the pitch. It took a lot to forgive Wayne for what he did last year, and she’s worried that in this new environment, he might be tempted to have wild nights out

‘She worries he’ll be tempted to go wild’

with his new team mates, especially if he’s looking for a bit of excitement after his games.

“She knows that Wayne has this weakness, and it’s starting to look more and more like America is the worst place in the world for their fresh start.”
