Was Wayne Rooney’s latest booze-driven bender in Florida the final straw? A long-suffering Coleen seems to think so
After yet another drunken front-page embarrassment, the WAG has had enough
There’s no denying that Coleen Rooney has been through a lot during her relationship with husband Wayne. From sleeping with prostitutes, to drunkenly driving home a woman he’d just met in a bar, the footballer hasn’t exactly treated the mother of his four children with respect.
After every indiscretion, Coleen has chosen to forgive him. But that might be about to change after his latest stunt. The former England captain was in Florida, training with his DC United teammates when he embarked upon a ten-hour drinking session. It ended with him in a bar, downing shots with barmaid Vicki Rosiek, before getting into her car, while Coleen and the boys were home in Washington.
Although both Wayne and Vicki insisted it was completely innocent, we’re told Coleen is furious that Wayne has put himself in this position again, and doesn’t know if she can take any more. She took the boys – Kai, nine, Klay, five, Kit, three, and one-year-old Cass – away on a beach holiday last week with her parents, where she will decide if she really wants to carry on with the marriage.
“Coleen is using the holiday to get her head straight, and to try to figure out the best plan for her future,” our insider says. “Every other time he’s done this to her, she’s always put the kids first. But this time, she says it’s all about her, and whether or not she wants to stay married to a man who clearly can’t be bothered with her. Her first reaction was that she’s had enough, that she can’t stand him and is ready to leave him. She actually
told him, ‘I’m leaving you’, but whether she is serious about that remains to be seen. Coleen’s religious and traditional family beliefs have had a big influence on everything that’s happened in her life so far – and as much as she values and respects all of that, she now feels that she is mature enough to make her own decisions, based on her own needs. She moved her life from the UK to America to be with Wayne, and she’s really not happy there. Now she can’t see the point in staying there, and is seriously considering coming back home while Wayne stays in Washington.”
The latest incident occurred just weeks after Wayne was arrested and thrown into a cell for four hours for being drunk at Washington Dulles Airport, following a flight on a private jet. And that was just 18 months after he was charged with drink-driving after taking party girl Laura Simpson home, while a pregnant Coleen, 32, was on holiday. She’s always defended her husband in the past, but now friends say she’s seeing him for what he really is, and is questioning everything.
“She now knows that Wayne is a very selfish man and is clearly bored with their life, and that he has a lot of issues stemming from how carefully managed his life has always been, due to football. When she confronted Wayne over the latest incident, he just yelled back to leave him alone and why can’t he just go off and do his own thing,” we’re told. “Coleen is in a really tough situation – she is not going to take leaving him lightly, because of the kids, but it is making her miserable staying with him like this. But she’s also really afraid of what the future would hold: a divorce, her being a single mum. And, even worse, Wayne being a single man again, and knowing what he would get up to, and all the headlines that would follow. She just really needs the holiday to think and to talk through everything with her parents and friends – somewhere the kids will be happily playing and won’t notice how preoccupied she is. She needs to think through the scenario, and have it all figured out in her head before she acts.”
Coleen and Wayne, 33, have been together since they were 16, and Coleen previously revealed that he’s been her only boyfriend.
So it’s understandable she is worried about how she will cope with not being with him. But she has realised that they may have grown apart, and it could be time for them to move on.
“Coleen has had some counselling since the last time this happened, as she wanted to get help with understanding her feelings and the relationship,” our insider says. “The fact is they married really young, and they have matured differently. They are sometimes more like brother and sister. They are tied together because of the kids and, whatever happens, Coleen will make sure the boys have a good relationship with their dad. Wayne totally relies on Coleen for everything – but she gets no support from him, nor does he seem to take any interest in her or her life. The kids are her whole existence, and she will find it incredibly hard to put them through anything. She is in pieces over the thought of it. But she can’t keep putting up with this.”
It’s been reported that Coleen wants Wayne to go to rehab to try and save their marriage, but we’re told this is the last thing on her mind. Her friends don’t think Wayne can change, and that maybe they both need some time out of the marriage.
“Wayne often acts like he would rather be single, and that Coleen is always stopping him from having fun,” our insider says. “It seems like Wayne wants a gap year in his life – he feels that, because of his fame, he was denied a ‘normal’ life. He just wants to get drunk all the time, go to cheap bars and watch sports. He feels trapped. But Coleen has told him he can’t do that, because he is married father of four. There are so many issues between them right now, and Wayne doesn’t seem to care if he upsets her.”
Their youngest boy, Cass, turned one last Friday and for the first time ever, Coleen posted a message just from herself, not from her and Wayne, saying, “To my little smiler... I love you very much”. Is this a sign of things to come? We’ll have to wait and see. n kate randall
