Authentic experiences at Liyela Retreat

-

If you’re looking for the authentic Maldivian island life and culture, make sure to plan a stop at Liyela Retreat in lively Maafushi – an island just 24km south of the capital, Malé. Liyela is a sanctuary from bustling island life, with a rustic and minimalist feel to the rooms. Alcohol is prohibited, which gave us a well needed chance for a detox. If you must get your booze fix, there are “floating bars” – large boats which you can reach by speedboat. We started our day at the hotel’s rooftop restaurant, Raha, with a Mediterranean breakfast paired with an espresso tonic – a cross between an espresso martini and a G&T (non-alcoholic, obvs). As you’re surrounded by some of the world’s most beautiful stretches of ocean, explore with a half-day snorkelling trip (Shadowpalm.com) and see manta rays, dolphins and turtles. Or, try your hand at sustainable sunset fishing and enjoy your catch with a BBQ on the beach. Modest dressing is required on the island, but you can still fit in some downtime sunbathing on the designated bikini beach, or if you’re feeling a bit more energetic, you can try out a range of watersports. Turn up the romance with a candlelit dinner at Raha. It’s the perfect spot to get that Insta-worthy sunset snap. We recommend the spice-crusted Maldivian tuna fillet with Turkish grain salad and tahini sauce, and finish with some of their signature sorbets – passion fruit, mango and peach. Overnight accommodation in an Ocean Palm Deluxe room with breakfast at Liyela Retreat costs from £97 per night. To book, visitliyela retreat.com.
