Her lawyers are blowing hot and then cold
‘It goes against his Buddhist beliefs’
They’re set to marry at the end of the year, but there’s one pesky little thing standing in Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom’s way – the prenup. Although both are very wealthy, Katy – who last week was pictured in Hawaii filming her new music video (right) – is said to be worth more than ten times the amount of her fiancé. Understandably, she wants to protect her $330million fortune.
“Katy and Orlando’s wedding
is moving full-steam ahead for the end of the year. The only stumbling block seems to be the prenuptial agreement that Katy’s lawyers are insisting Orlando signs,” says our source. “He’s been quite shocked about how her team have handled the situation. He’s already financially secure [he’s worth around $30m], and doesn’t see why they have to bother, as he’d never go after her money – but it’s not just Katy’s decision. She has businesses and deals that are set to bring in big profits for the rest of her career, and her lawyers don’t want to risk any of that, because potentially Orlando could seek to get a cut of it if things didn’t work out.” Although Katy, 34, is lovedup with Orlando, 42, we’re told her financial team want to make sure she’s protected, especially as both she and Orlando have been divorced before. Katy married Russell Brand in 2010, but they split less than two years later, while Orlando has an eight-year-old son, Flynn, with ex-wife Miranda Kerr.
“Orlando feels like he’s marrying into a corporation and it goes against a lot of his Buddhist beliefs, but Katy has to have her business head on going into this marriage,” our source adds. “She didn’t sign a prenup when she married Russell, and was reprimanded by her business managers at the time. They all felt that Katy had a lucky escape that Russell didn’t go after any of Katy’s money. But she’s worth almost triple now than what she was worth then, and they feel it’s better to protect that.”
The source continues, “When you have a business empire of over $300m, you can’t just hope and pray for the best – there needs to be a contract in place. It’s causing a lot of rows and Katy is terrified that it’s putting Orlando off the big commitment. Part of her would love to just throw caution to the wind and take the plunge without any of the paperwork, but she has to be sensible.” ■
