KINKY HAIR IS THIS YOU?

Kinky or Afro hair is made up of tight coiled curls. While it appears strong, kinky hair feels super-soft to touch and is prone to damage and breakage easily. This is due to it being the driest of hair types, which can lead to brittleness in the follicles – meaning hydration is key.

WHAT TO DO

“Due to its molecular structure, Afro hair struggles with moisture retention so an intensive moisturising treatment is the ultimate antidote,” says Winnie Awa, founder of Antidotestreet.com, an educational website for Afro and multi-textured hair types. “Simplicity is key, so wash hair once a week, deep condition and follow by layering a leave-in conditioner, oil and finally a cream to lock moisture into the hair.”

STRAIGHT HAIR IS THIS YOU?

This may seem obvious, but straight hair is, well, straight and it stays that way no matter how hard you try to force it not to be. Luckily for you, straight hair also tends to be soft and shiny due to the way the cuticles lie. However, this can lead to oil becoming visible much quicker than other hair types, causing it to appear flat.

WHAT TO DO

“In order to build volume in straight hair, use a volumising shampoo and conditioner,” says Stephane Ferreira, Live True Technical Director for Redken. “Then, apply a root-lifting spray, applying section by section at the roots before drying upside down. Massage the roots in circular movements as you do so to build volume.”

WAVY HAIR IS THIS YOU?

Not straight, not curly, but somewhere in between? You’re a wavy one. Most people with this hair type will find their waves start towards the end of the hair, while the roots are prone to dryness and frizz – especially when humidity takes hold.

WHAT TO DO

“When your hair is damaged, it’s more likely to look frizzy,” says Aussie Haircare. “Make sure you have consistent haircuts to keep ends healthy. When it comes to at-home care, don’t over shampoo, as washing strips your hair of its natural moisture, which in turn can cause your scalp to produce even more oil to compensate. If you’re tempted to wash it, use a dry shampoo instead. Finally, invest in a super-lightweight oil, which will smooth hair and reduce frizz.

CURLY HAIR IS THIS YOU?

Curls come in many different shapes and sizes. However, when held vertical, they will always form an S-shape. Like wavy hair, those with curls can also be plagued with unwanted frizz, which can lead to knots and tangles. You’ll also find your hair needs lots of moisture to keep your curls looking their best.

WHAT TO DO

“Curly hair lacks moisture,” says James Earnshaw, Amika’s UK artist ambassador. “It’s super-important not to overly shampoo your hair, as this will dry it out, so try a co-wash to cleanse and condition at once. Follow with a curl-defining cream, then as your hair air-drys, twist random bits for soft, bouncy curls. Once dry, simply tilt your head upside down and shake to separate.”
