‘There’ll be a big fallout from this’

The factory fire sets Emmerdale aflame

- Kay Ribeiro welcomes you to Soaptopia

If you can’t stand the heat, then get out of Emmerdale next week, as the factory’s going up in flames – and it’s all thanks to Kerry and Amy.

Amy’s debts in Ireland look set to jeopardise her residency order for Kyle, so mum Kez suggests they “borrow” money from the factory. After Amy reminds her she’s been caught on CCTV, the pair decide to return the cash, but a change of heart – and a rash decision to rip out the CCTV – causes a raging fire. And they don’t realise that Tracy’s trapped in the storeroom, where she was waiting for Billy. Laura Norton, who plays Kerry, and Natalie Ann Jamieson, who’s Amy, explain how it feels to be not-so-twisted firestarters...

How did it feel to lead such a dramatic storyline?

Laura: It’s always exciting to be doing something like that. My character is usually being silly , so I love doing all of the drama. And I know that there’s going to be a big fallout from this, and there’s a lot of different layers to it.

Is Amy cross with Kerry for deciding to steal the money?

Natalie: Yes and no. She’s cross because she thinks Kerry’s instincts were not the correct ones, because it’s charity money. But, at the same time, she can see that Kerry is trying to help her.

Who does Amy owe money to?

N: In Ireland, there’s a woman she owes money to, because her ex-partner asked her to take out a loan. This woman has managed to track her down, and Amy has to find this money somehow.

If someone loses their life in

the fire, how will they cope? L: No matter how tough-skinned anybody is, or how much trouble they’ve been in before, it’s awful to think you may be responsible for something like that.

Could there be a jail sentence at the end of this?

L: Who knows? There have to be consequences somehow. I guess the only thing the pair are hanging on to is that they didn’t do anything intentionally. It was an accident. And ridiculous though it sounds, it was all for the right reasons. They just thought they were stealing some money that they always had the intention of returning.

Were you still on set when they filmed the explosion and the fire?

L: Yeah – it was brilliant. They had to move us out of the vicinity, because it was too hot and there was shrapnel going everywhere. It’s funny when you see something like that, because we were all getting genuinely emotional.

How long will it be before the truth comes out?

L: It’s quite a long time. They play out a proper guilt storyline for as long as they can. The truth is going to come out eventually – but we don’t know when.
