The Little Mix singer reveals she was driven to the brink by online trolling

- Charlotte oliver

She’s one-fourth of the UK’S biggest girl band, but Jesy Nelson knows what it feels like to hit rock bottom. Last week, she revealed in her BBC Three documentary Jesy Nelson: Odd One Out that she’d once tried to kill herself, having been driven to despair by online trolling. And since confessing the extent of her depression, the Little Mix singer has been praised as “brave” and “strong” – not least by boyfriend Chris Hughes, who has since revealed he wants to marry “role model” Jesy.

“My girlfriend is the best motha f**king role model on this planet,” the former Love Islander, 24, told his followers

after Jesy’s documentary aired, adding that she was “amazing”. And he didn’t stop there, admitting on an episode of Geordie OGS that he’s already planning marriage and babies with Jesy, who he’s dated for eight months. Talking to friend Gaz Beadle, Chris said they’d probably have kids together “in about a year-and-a-half”.

Chris’ words came soon after Jesy, 28, spoke in detail about the early years of Little Mix’s success, revealing that her depression left a lasting mark on what should have been the happiest time of her life.

“It was such a weird feeling to be living your dream, but hating it at the same time,” she confessed, detailing how the online hate began from the moment Little Mix won The X Factor in 2011. “I had about 101 Facebook messages in my inbox, and the first one that came up was from some random man, saying, ‘You are the ugliest thing I’ve seen in my life, you do not deserve to be in this girl band. You deserve to die.’ I wasn’t just known as one of the singers in Little Mix, I was known as ‘the fat, ugly one’.”

According to Jesy, it was after a performance in 2013 – when, yet again, she’d received more online abuse – that she tried to take her own life. “I was sat in bed, crying, thinking, ‘This is never going to go. I’m going to feel sad for the rest of my life, so what is the point in being here?’” she told the cameras. “The only way I can describe the pain is like constantly being heartbroken.”

Thankfully, six years later, the singer is stronger than ever, and with Chris plotting marriage and kids, she has even more reasons to smile. n
