Dani Dyer tells us all about her new show
The reality star’s out to discover what makes a genuine relationship
She found fame on a little show called Love Island, so Dani Dyer knows all too well that gut-wrenching feeling when host Caroline Flack struts in, bringing shock twists and eliminations with her. But these days, Dani’s the one sending shivers down contestants’ spines, as she takes the reins of True Love Or True Lies?, which – to all intents and purposes – is Love Island’s cheeky cousin (eight couples compete, but some of them are faking romance).
Sitting down with heat ahead of the show’s premiere, which will see her dad Danny reprise his role as narrator, Dani, 23, talks slo-mo strutting, faking love, and finding happiness with her boyfriend Sammy Kimmence… This was your first time hosting – how did it go? Good! I was so nervous when I first walked down the stairs. But every night, I felt more confident. And because I was a contestant on Love Island, I know what it feels like. I knew they’d be feeling nervous – it was like that whenever Caroline arrived. But I did her strut, hair blowing in the wind! Did it make you more cynical about love? A bit. Sometimes, I’d be thinking, “Should I know that about my own relationship?” I’d go home being like, “Sammy, do you know my favourite colour?” But every relationship is different – everyone has their own problems and their own strengths. Do you think people were faking romance on Love Island? I don’t think you can fake it in there – you’d be caught out so quickly. Yes, it’s an experience and an opportunity, but you do want to meet someone. I couldn’t fake it, anyway. Was it nice working with your dad on the show? Well, I didn’t see my dad – he was in a little box doing the voiceover. But he got emotional watching me. He was like, “I can’t believe that’s my baby!” How are things going with Sammy? Really, really good – he’s my best friend. My mum and dad love him, and this is the first boyfriend my sister likes. Would you consider doing your own show with him? Never say never. Obviously, I was on a reality show, and I wouldn’t want people thinking, “Oh, here she goes again.” I’d do something like The Mummy Diaries… but that’s not happening for a while! ■
True Love Or True Lies? is on MTV Monday 21 October at 9pm
