THE MOFFATTS ARE BACK

The Moffatts are back on our screens, but they’re not watching telly…

‘imagine not picking yourself apart all the time’

We were used to seeing Scarlett and the rest of the Moffatts sat on their sofas watching telly in Gogglebox, so it’ll be a surprise to see them in their new show The British Tribe Next Door in very different circumstances. Scarlett, 29 this week, and her family will live alongside the semi-nomadic Himba tribe in Namibia, in their own house – painstakingly recreated for the show. Scarlett tells heat they all learned a lot from each other… what was your first reaction when the show was suggested to you? I was over the moon to do something with my family. I haven’t done anything with them since Gogglebox. in the first episode, the himba women ask you to wear traditional clothing, which means being quite exposed, and we’re left on a cliffhanger whether or not you’d accept their offer… Well, let’s just say that I’m a much more confident person now. I’m even doing little things like getting the tops of my arms out when I’m doing TV. I feel like a brand-new person. how did the himba women help with your body confidence? They are just so proud of the way that they look. Some of them haven’t even seen what they look like, but they feel beautiful and they feel strong. I just think, “Imagine not picking yourself apart all the time?” I was so envious of that. Even the fact that Kaitaarua kept saying, “I just want to be as fat as you, Scarlett.” If any of my other friends said that, I’d be like, “What are you saying?” But they were saying it from such a lovely place. I wasn’t bothered at all. back in the UK, you live up North but travel to London a lot. do you like keeping things separate? I feel like Hannah Montana. [Laughs.] Honestly, I feel like I’ve got the best of both worlds. I come down here and I’m on the TV and I get to go to cool things and I love my job. And then I go home and I stick my wellies on and walk the dog, go to the pub, see my boyfriend. Your boyfriend, scott, is slowly starting to appear more on your instagram – is he getting used to showbiz scarlett? I think he just knows I’m going to post it whatever! All of his social media is private. If I tell him I’ve been invited to a movie premiere and ask if he wants to come, he’s like, “Nah, shall we just wait til it’s out in the pictures and we’ll go to Pizza Hut and then go and see it?” But I really like that, actually. n

The British Tribe Next Door is on Channel 4, Tuesday 22 Oct, 9.15pm
