Will pregnant Maria see Gary’s true colours?
Any hope of Maria meeting her prince charming flew out the window when she hooked up with Gary Windass. And next week, it looks as though Gary’s lies might finally be catching up with him. Maria tells Gary she’s pregnant, so he suggests viewing a flat in Victoria Court and gives her the keys to a swanky 4x4 – making Sarah very jealous in the process. Sarah, of course, takes it upon herself to let Ali know Maria’s up the duff, and he warns Maria that Gary’s a loan shark and the furniture shop is a front. Is Maria naive, or does she know deep down that Gary’s dodgy and is turning a blind eye?
She is naive. She feels like it’s a bit strange that everyone is warning her off Gary, but she dismisses it as Sarah and Ali being jealous. She judges Gary on how he treats her, and he’s being really sweet with her.
Does the fact everyone is against them push them closer together? Yes, she does feel a bit like “them and us”. Maria says that everyone is treating them like piranhas, and Gary says, “It’s actually pariahs.”
How does Maria feel when she finds out she’s pregnant?
She does really like Gary. She’s known him for years and he’s a single dad, she’s a single mum, so they’ve got a lot in common. Plus, he’s being sweet to her. It started off as a bit of a rebound, but the more she sees Gary, the more she really likes him. But I do think she still has feelings for Ali. She is throwing herself into this relationship with Gary, trying to make it work because she knows Ali’s in a mess, so Gary seems like the safe bet – which couldn’t be further from the truth!
How strong are her feelings for Ali?
It wasn’t her decision to end the relationship and she’s still puzzled as to why it ended so suddenly, when he had just told her that he loved her. She knows that Ali still has feelings for her, so there is still some unfinished business there.
How does Ali react when he finds out about the pregnancy?
Maria thinks he’s jealous. He mentions about getting rid of the baby and she is shocked that he would really go that far just because he is jealous. She can’t see past that. But when he confronts her with all this new information about Gary being a loan shark, she can’t help but believe him. ■
