Alex: ‘I’ve got a friend for life in Michelle’

She may not have the glitterball, but she’s still a winner

‘I felt like I couldn’t stand there and be sad’

Just a few months ago, Alex Scott, 35, was far more into footballs than disco balls. But after our chat with the former Lioness, it’s clear she’s discovered not only a talent, but a love for dancing.

How did it feel leaving the show? It was mixed emotions. I felt like I couldn’t stand there and be sad because I’d had the best time ever. Am I gutted? Yeah. I’d have loved to have made the semi-finals, but at the same time, I never thought I’d be in the quarter-finals, considering how I was in week one. Which was your favourite dance? Definitely Beyoncé [Alex performed a paso doble to Run The World]. Judging by the messages I received, me and Neil achieved an iconic moment dancing to her song in Blackpool. I loved my Charleston, too, because I feel like that was my little turning point. I was smiling the whole way through it. You’ve made some great friends – was there anyone you were surprised to get on so well with? I’d have to say Michelle – just because she’s older than me, we have different backgrounds, and she’s a judge [on

Rupaul’s Drag Race], whereas I’m just that sportsperson from east London! But we got on well from day one. She took me under her wing and says she sees a bit of me in her. Will you stay in touch? I’m seeing her tonight and I saw her yesterday. I actually don’t stop seeing her! She’s already invited me to visit her in LA, which I will do. We’re friends way beyond Strictly. It’s been said before, but do you ever get mistaken for Meghan Markle? It’s not like I get mistaken, I just always get told we look alike. I’m also finding that I’m not “Alex Scott the footballer” now, I’m “Alex Scott from Strictly”. Who do you think will win? That’s hard because I know everyone’s put in the work, so you can’t say someone deserves it more than the others. I think Kelvin will win, as he has that edge. But I do love an underdog. I’d like to see Emma win because people don’t know the journey she’s been on behind the scenes. She’s had to deal with a lot, so for her to even make it this far and get to the final is amazing. ■

Alex will take part in the Strictly Come Dancing UK Arena Tour, which runs from 16 January-9 February. Visit Strictlycomedancinglive.com for venues and tickets
