Why Wayne said no to the office Christmas party
But Coleen is still happy to enjoy herself
He isn’t exactly in the running for husband of the year, but Wayne Rooney is making the ultimate sacrifice for longsuffering wife Coleen – he’s missing the office Christmas party. The former England football captain recently began his new role as player/coach at Derby County, and has been keen to mix with his teammates and colleagues. However, given his history with drunken behaviour over the past couple of years, Wayne has decided to give a festive night out with the lads a miss.
“Wayne was really looking forward to going to the party and hanging out with his new teammates. But things between him and Coleen still aren’t great, so he felt it was best he stayed at home – although she’s still enjoying plenty of Christmas drinks with the girls,” our insider explains. “He knows Coleen will worry if he’s out with the lads, and even though he would be on his best behaviour – due to him also being the team coach – he wants to show that he’s changed his ways.”
It also doesn’t help Coleen’s fears that Derby have become known as a bit of a party club, after three of their players were involved in a car crash following a team night out earlier this year. All three had been drinking and it left their club captain out for the season due to a knee injury.
Although it’s thought the club wanted to avoid a full-on Christmas party, because they don’t want to cause any more controversy with the fans, there were some drinks planned. And, as Wayne has a history of drinkdriving himself, it’s probably for the best that he bailed out.
When Coleen was pregnant with fourth son Cass and on holiday with their other three boys, Wayne was arrested for being under the influence as he drove home party girl Laura Simpson following a night out. Since then, he has been arrested again for being drunk and disorderly at a US airport, got into the car of a barmaid after a ten-hour drinking session and, most recently, was spotted getting into a lift with a woman after enjoying a hot tub session with her and his teammates.

life in the UK after a year of living over in the States, she has also set some rules for him.
“Coleen is desperate to start the New Year with a clean slate, and to have both her and Wayne leave behind all the drama of 2019,” our insider says. “Coleen has asked that Wayne cut back on his drinking, and she’s requested that he posts more about their relationship on his social media. It’s to make it clear he’s a family man who shouldn’t be going out on booze binges with barmaids.” ■
