‘Don’t mistake Mike’s confidence for arrogance’

The Love Islander’s school pal defends his snakey behaviour

-

When Mike Boateng coupled up with Leanne on the first day of this series, some people were already backing them to be winners. But Mike’s whole Love Island world has been flipped upside down in the last week. First, he gave Leanne the “ick” and she left, then he went in all guns blazing for Jess, and now… Casa Amor. We chatted to Mike’s friend of 12 years, 25-year-old Josh Pokoo-powell, about Mr Confidence himself…

Has Mike always been competitive when it comes to girls? I’ve never really seen him have to compete with others, he’s always been the confident type! The competitiveness comes from his sporting background – it’s always something he enjoys. He is definitely confident – does he have any insecurities? Oh no, not at all. And that is Mike to a T. He has that confidence where he knows he can back himself 100 per cent. But don’t take that for arrogance. I think, when he knows what he wants and thinks he can see a future there, he’ll go for it. So, you don’t think he’s got a game plan? No. He wears his heart on his sleeve and is just prepared to take the knock-backs. What do you think Casa Amor will mean for him? Oh boy! I’ve been on holiday with Mike before and, honestly, it’s going to be a curve ball. You never know in the villa – things can always change. Ultimately, does he want to settle down? Yeah. I mean, he said it – he wants someone he can take home to mum. And I know his mum quite well – she’s going to have to be a good girl! ■
