‘You don’t feel like you’re being judged in a class’

What do you get if you cross human positivity ball Fleur East with an energy fuelled dance workout? The newest ambassador for Zumba, is what. Loved by celebs from Emily Ratajowski to J-LO, this dance-based exercise programme developed by a Colombian dancer in the ’90s is a great to get your sweat on, as it’s more like a night in your fave club than a gruelling workout.

“It’s perfect for me, as I just dance and move all day, every day,” Fleur tells us at the recent launch in Manchester. “I’ve always danced from a young age. My mum and sister can’t stand going shopping with me, because if there’s music playing in the shop, I just can’t stop moving.” Shopping and burning cals at the same time? This could be our new exercise jam…

Why is dance such a great way to exercise? I think it’s the connection with the music. Music is my first love, so the fact you can express your emotions through dance is the best feeling. I love being onstage and performing, and dance is one of my favourite things to do.

But it’s a full-on calorie burn, too, right? Dancing is a full-body workout. But you don’t even realise that you’re working your whole body when you’re doing it, because you’re too busy having fun. We have zero coordination. Does that matter? Definitely not. The atmosphere is so lovely and welcoming, you don’t feel like you’re being judged in a class. As long as you’re moving and having fun, that’s the most important thing. All the classes are perfect for beginners because a lot of the moves are repeated throughout the workout, so you can pick them up. You have so many chances to nail it. What would you say to someone who’s been thinking about doing a class, but doesn’t have the confidence? Just give it a try. If you’re finding it daunting, go with a friend. The minute you get in there and start moving, you’ll feel less intimidated, because everyone is doing it together. It’s not a full-on choreographed class, so it’s not like you have to get each move right – it’s just a bit of fun. What do you love most about Zumba classes? It’s like going to a club with your mates, but you’re actually doing something that’s good for you and your body. There’s no pressure to get it right or overexert yourself. You don’t need any fancy equipment. All you need is some comfy shoes and clothes that you can squat down low and shake your booty in, and you’re good to go. ■
