Saint Frances
Cert 15, 100 minutes, in cinemas this July
Starring: Kelly O’sullivan, Romana Edith Williams, Charin Alvarez Director: Alex Thompson
THE PLOT Aged 34, Bridget (O’sullivan) feels her life is going nowhere. She faces a new challenge when she becomes nanny to spirited six-year-old Frances (Williams), thus allowing the girl’s two mums to focus on their new baby. WHAT’S RIGHT WITH IT? This Chicago-set indie flick neatly blends comedy and drama with a relatable story that also – admirably – tackles a couple of heavy topics. WHAT’S WRONG WITH IT? Bridget’s dalliance with a supposedly hot (and deeply smug) guitar teacher feels like a plot contrivance inserted to give her a learning experience. VERDICT Winner of the audience award at last year’s SXSW festival, Saint Frances is funny, tender and truthful. HHHH
