Kate: ‘Going back to work has been hard’

The Duchess opens up on family life

-

The Duchess of Cambridge gave an insight into her family life last week as she launched the BBC’S Tiny Happy People initiative – which provides free resources to parents and is supported by the Royal Foundation. Speaking at the event, she praised the new website, saying that she wished she’d had that support as a first-time mum.

“So much focus, particularly during pregnancy and when you have a newborn baby, is the physical development,” she said. “But what I found was missing was the support on how to further their emotional and mental development.” Kate – who is mum to Prince George, seven, Princess Charlotte, five, and two-year-old Prince Louis – also spoke about how lockdown had been challenging. “Some parts have been really positive – spending extra time with the kids, everything like that – but it is equally stressful,” the 38 year old said. She also admitted it was hard to leave her children, to return to royal duties, saying, “How do you extend that umbilical cord from having had that precious time together? I know from a personal perspective – having all that extra time together as a family, but then being able to step back again and go back to how things were – it’s really hard for lots of families.”

The Duchess – who was sporting a new bronde hairdo at the launch – was also happy to joke about her children’s voracious appetites. “My children have bottomless pits,” she laughed. “I feel like a constant feeding machine for them.”

And while she and Prince William have both returned to work, complying with COVID-19 guidelines of course, Kate revealed there was one member of the family who wasn’t as good at following the rules. “Louis doesn’t understand social distancing,” she said. “He goes out wanting to cuddle everything, particularly any babies younger than him.” ■
