Posh: ‘We’ll prove we’re British royalty’

Hear ye, hear ye! The Beckhams are coming to St Paul’s

- CHARLOTTE OLIVER

She’s always prided herself on her A-list friendships, influential family brand and, of course, her Posh moniker. But, as heat recently told you, Victoria Beckham’s been feeling distinctly un-posh recently in comparison to Brooklyn’s soon-to-be in-laws, Nelson and Claudia Heffner Peltz, whose £1.3billion fortune and high-society life seriously eclipses the Beckhams’ modest £336million. Sure, the Peltzes have elite political and business connections on their side, but we’re told Victoria is pulling out all the stops to prove that she and David can also play in the big leagues. And that means booking Brooklyn, 21, and his fiancé Nicola Peltz, 25, a wedding venue fit for a prince and princess. Namely, St Paul’s Cathedral.

“This is Vic’s bid to show that they also have power and influence and even have connections to the royal family – after all, they were invited to both William and Harry’s weddings,” says an insider close to Victoria – who is reportedly requesting to hold her eldest son’s British wedding (there will also be one in the US) at the world-renowned church in central London. Brooklyn qualifies for the honour, which needs to be approved by the Archbishop of Canterbury, as both Vic and David have OBE status. “She really wants it to be the crème de la crème of UK society and she’s willing to do whatever it takes – and that means gaining access to British institutions that carry clout, such as St Paul’s. If she gets it, that would be a pretty big deal – it’s where royals get married

[Charles and Diana married there in 1981].”

It’s been a sobering experience for fashion designer Posh – who’s also mum to Romeo, 17, Cruz, 15, and nine-year-old Harper – to be seen as the “underdog”, as she and David have been in the upper echelons of the A-list for decades now. But her starry connections and red-carpet invites are a bit irrelevant to Mr and Mrs Peltz, who prefer to spend their time mixing with international socialites and politicians. Think country club lunches and political fundraisers over showbiz awards shows and fashion events.

According to our source, Victoria is really feeling out of her depth.

“The Beckhams have always been the top dogs in showbiz, fashion and football, but Vic feels like she can’t compete in the world of power and politics,” we’re told. “The fact they are friends with Elton John, Eva Longoria or even Anna Wintour doesn’t mean much to the Peltzes. But, obviously, being friends with the heirs to the British throne does. This is their trump card when it comes to impressing high-society Americans and Vic knows that.”

While VB is on a one-woman mission to impress Brooklyn’s in-laws, we’re told that David is trying to talk her down and remind her what’s important – that Brooklyn and Nicola get the wedding they want. “Insecurity really fuels Victoria, she can’t help it,” says our source. “She’s trying to draw up the perfect list of influential guests – including royals – to prove they’re regarded as royalty in the UK. But David’s been telling her that, besides family and friends, most attendees will be Brooklyn’s friends. He’s worried that the wedding is being turned into a show, but she’s not backing down.”

Here’s hoping the Archbishop of Canterbury hears Vic’s pleas and says, “I do.” n
