WEAR IT, WORK IT: POLKA DOTS

Style Ed Laura on how to make this trend work for you

-

Yes, polka dots are back again! From bold spots to tiny dots, everything looks spotty right now. And whether you go for a shirt dress, co-ord or sharp tailoring, there’s an abundance of choice out there, so no matter what your body shape, you can totally rock this look.

The brilliant thing with spots is that you can go for anything from an oversized print, to a more minimal polka dot or even a mix of patterns – the options are endless. The key is to wear what makes you look and feel good. So, remember your silhouette and what works with your body shape. Keep in mind what you want to emphasise and don’t be afraid to show off your figure.

And, if you don’t feel brave enough to do polka dots head-to-toe, team a printed skirt with plain white pieces, or try black or blue denim to break up your look.

BOTTOMS

If you’re bigger on the bottom half, fit ’n’ flare styles and A-lines are ideal for balancing. Want to create the illusion of height? Longer lines are great for this, even if you’re petite, as floor-skimming styles will make pins appear longer. Showing some ankle is a fab way to make legs instantly appear longer, too – try ankle-grazer trousers or asymmetric skirts to make you look more statuesque.

TOPS

Want to create the illusion of a bigger bust? Go for something fitted up top or try cleverly placed volume, like ruffles at the neckline. Want to disguise your tummy area or nip in the waist? Choose a wrap style or peplum shape to create balance and show off the waist. Petite? Try a cropped option or tuck in at the waist to get the proportions right.

DRESSES

To show off your shape or hug curves, go for a fitted option that highlights the waist or a full-on bodycon style for real wow factor. Conscious of your middle? Try a wrap dress – it’s the ultimate figure flatterer. You can never go wrong with a classic slip style, as it can be worn with everything from a belt to a white tee underneath. Bias cuts are ideal for creating the illusion of curves, too.
