It’s normally 18 year olds who go and “find themselves” somewhere exotic, coming back six months later wearing harem pants and 10,000 friendship bracelets. But, according to insiders, Kanye West is out to prove that it’s never too late to have a gap year – especially when you need time to take stock of your life.
Over the past few months, the rapper – who suffers from bipolar disorder – has travelled all over the world, and his erratic behaviour and unpredictable outbursts have concerned fans, friends and family. But now that his and Kim Kardashian’s six-year marriage is looking more and more likely to end in divorce, we’re told that Kanye is even more set on getting away from it all.
“A lot of this is Kanye burying his head in the sand and running away from the inevitable,” says an insider close to the 43 year old, who followed his visit to Jamaica last week with a trip to Haiti, before heading back to LA for a quick “date night” with Kim, which sources tell us was his wife’s attempt to quash all the split rumours. “Kim is one step away from filing for divorce, but first she wants to sit down with Kanye and talk over the important issues, such as the kids and finances. He’s doing everything he can to avoid that, so on the rare occasions he does see Kim, it’s just for a brief dinner, and then he’ll dash off as quickly as possible.”
The insider adds, “He doesn’t want to face the situation they’re in right now. He keeps saying he needs to find himself before he can even think about the future.” n
