Lily: ‘I have so many dildos in my washing basket’

The singer talks finding love – and pleasure – second time around

-

She surprised us all by hightailing it to Las Vegas in September, and saying “I do” to actor David Harbour in a ceremony officiated by “Elvis”, no less. But according to Lily Allen, Sin City was a very last-minute decision.

“We wanted to get married – and because of the lockdown situations everywhere, it was just really difficult,” said the singer last week, while appearing on Gizzi Erskine and Sydney Lima’s podcast Sex, Lies & DM Slides. “[Vegas] was assumed to be the only place that was stupid enough to have a ceremony, so that’s what happened… The vows were really funny. It was, ‘I vow never to step on your blue suede shoes.’ No religion, no family. It was great.”

At the time, Lily and Stranger Things star David shared photos from their big day – which saw them rock up to Graceland Chapel with Lily’s daughters Ethel, eight, and Marnie, seven, before heading to US burger joint In-n-out for the reception. But Lily explained they’d only chosen to go public with the wedding after Nevada Clark County tweeted a copy of their marriage certificate, adding, “So, that saying of ‘What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas’ is actually ‘What happens in Vegas gets tweeted out by Vegas’.”

Lily was previously married to builder Sam Cooper, but according to the 35 year old, she’s found her, ahem, sweet spot second time around. And a large part of that is due to finally feeling sexually empowered, after spending her twenties solely focused on pleasing men. She explained, “I felt like a vessel for male enjoyment, and I think that a lot of it [was] fear… We think, as soon as you’re not convincing him that he is doing a good job, he loses his confidence and then who knows what the f**k could happen… It’s not going to be a pleasurable experience.”

Lily’s also on a mission to help other women feel sexually empowered, and has even released her very own sex toy – the Womanizer Liberty. And, according to her, married life doesn’t mean she’s saying goodbye to her very own toy chest. “I have so many [vibrators],” she revealed. “I actually have basically a washing basket in my bathroom that’s got two sides to it… I guess you’re meant to put your whites and colours in it, or your dry cleaning, but it’s actually just washing and dildos.” n
