‘I love sexy, strong bodies’
NAME: KIRSTY GALLACHER AGE: 44 OCCUPATION : TV PRESENTER
What’s your workout routine?
I train three times a week with my trainer Mel Deane (former rugby pro), and we do weights and circuits, which I love as I get my strength and cardio. He mixes it up to keep me interested. I try to get a couple of short runs in or go on my watt bike. Sometimes, at the beginning of the week, I realise that I can only get two sessions in because I’ve got lots on, so I’ll do a Zwift workout on the watt bike, which is an app where you can join a class.
How competitive are you?
I push myself training with others, otherwise I end up chatting with my trainer. But when you have someone with you, the stakes are higher.
How do you find time to work out?
It’s usually mid-morning after doing the school run, all the animal bits [Kirsty has two sons with ex husband Paul Sampson, two dogs and a tortoise], and whizzing around the house making beds. I don’t like training later in the day, as we’re always on the go as working parents and I start flagging. Early in the morning, you’re on
autopilot.
How do you fuel your training?
At breakfast, I’ll eat something light, like a grapefruit. I’m an ambassador for Kinetica and their whey protein shakes are amazing.
I keep readymixed ones in the fridge, so that I can shove it my bag and glug it in the car. I’ll eat well after a training session – I’m always starving!
Who is your #fitspo?
On Instagram, it’s all about fitness for me. Dame Kelly Holmes is amazing to follow – I love her. During lockdown, she was doing these Hiit sessions, which were great. I love Caroline Pearce, too, who was a Gladiator when I used to present that show. She’s got one of those sexy, strong bodies, which I love.
Do you follow any diet rules?
No. My mum is a dietitian and brought us up knowing that you should eat a balanced diet and have everything in moderation. I never tell myself not to eat any particular food, but I don’t have a sweet tooth. If I need a snack, I’ll eat a protein bar or a banana.
How do you motivate yourself?
You know that feeling when you’re bouncing after exercise, you feel really smug? I tap into that feeling. But if you’re not feeling it, listen to your body and be kind to yourself or you can put your training back for days. Training should be fun. Pick something you like to do, otherwise you won’t enjoy it. And don’t become robotic about it.
