-

If anyone deserves to have a birthday treat, then it’s the special pooch in your life, who loves you unconditionally – even if you do tell them off for eating out of the bin. Thankfully, the Tasty Treats For Happy Dogs recipe book (Ebury Press, £12.99) is full of tasty pup-safe treats for your favourite furry friend, like this cake. Maybe give the spoonlicking a miss this time, though…

Blender Birthday Cake

Ingredients:

● 165g (5½oz) liver of your choice ● 50g (2oz) apple purée ● 1 egg ● 2 tbsp porridge oats ● 1 tsp ground cinnamon ● 2 tbsp olive oil ● 2 tbsp water ● 1 large carrot, peeled ● 1 tbsp chopped parsley ● Fresh fruit, to decorate For the icing: ● 1 tbsp Greek yoghurt ● 1 tbsp smooth peanut butter Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/350°f/ gas mark 4. Grease a 450g (1lb) loaf tin and line it with baking paper, making sure it generously overhangs the sides. 2. Place the liver, apple purée, egg, oats, cinnamon, olive oil and water into a blender and whizz until you have a smooth liquid. 3. Grate the carrot into a bowl, add the parsley, then pour in the liver liquid and mix well. Transfer to the prepared loaf tin and bake for 45 minutes. 4. When ready, allow to cool in the tin for a few minutes, then, using the paper overhanging the sides of the tin, carefully lift out the loaf and place on a wire rack until cold. 5. Combine the icing ingredients in a bowl and mix until smooth, then spread on top of the cake. Decorate with fresh fruit, if you like. Store the cake in an airtight container in the fridge for up to four days. Feed 1–3 slices at a time, depending on the size of your dog.
