Why Adele won’t sing about her divorce

We don’t care, we just want the album

‘Her new album will have a different sound’

She is the undisputed queen of heartbreak anthems – we’ve all found ourselves weeping about an ex into a glass of wine to Someone Like You at some point in our lives – but things are now changing for Adele.

It has been reported that, out of respect, Adele will not use her divorce from Simon Konecki as inspiration for any tracks on her highly anticipated next album. Adele split from her husband of two years in 2019, and the pair finally reached a settlement last month. While the details of the financial agreement have not been made public, it is known that the couple’s assets and properties (including the singer’s £140m fortune) have been divvied up in mediation. Adele, 32, and Simon, 46, first started dating in 2011, and welcomed their son Angelo a year later. A source has said that it is for the sake of Angelo that Adele has agreed not to divulge the details of their split. “Heartbreak has helped Adele shift records over the years, but this is quite different,” the source explained. “They’re both aware their son Angelo should be protected, and that’s why Adele has agreed not to sing about their relationship. Her new album will have a different sound anyway, so it hasn’t bothered her too much that Simon quietly expected her to keep their relationship out of her music. It’s a show of respect.” And while it’s clear her son is her number-one priority – with Adele and Simon now living in neighbouring mansions in LA (left) to share custody – the Tottenham-born singer has moved on and seems to be enjoying the delights of the dating world. Adele had previously been linked to Drake, after she shared pictures of herself looking glam at his birthday in 2019. But most recently, she was linked to UK grime artist Skepta.

The pair were spotted on a number of dates in October 2019, and last September were again rumoured to be dating after they were seen together at a London bar. But Adele disappointed fans a month later by referring to herself as a “single cat lady” on her Saturday Night Live appearance.

While it has now been six years since her last LP, Adele recently celebrated the ten-year anniversary of her second album, 21. She wrote on Instagram, “Well I never! Happy 10 years old friend! It’s crazy how little I remember of what it was like and how I felt a decade ago. But thank you from the bottom of my heart for letting us into your lives and letting me be a soundtrack to some of it.” n
