Demi: ‘I had three strokes and a heart attack’
The singer on her near-fatal overdose
The trailer released last week for Youtube documentary Dancing With The Devil shocked fans with revelations about Demi Lovato’s addiction struggles. In the clip, the pop star admitted that she’d had three strokes and a heart attack caused by a drug overdose in 2018. Demi says to the camera, “The doctors said I had five to ten minutes.” She also reveals that she was told she’d been left with brain damage, admitting, “I still feel the effects of that.” The four-part documentary – which will begin on 23 March – will explore the singer’s professional and personal life over the last three years. It features interviews with Demi herself, as well as her close friends and family. The singer has always struggled with addiction issues and mental ill health, and in Dancing With The Devil, the 28 year old speaks freely about her problems, telling the interviewer, “FYI, I’m going to say it all, and if we don’t want to use any of it, we can take it out.” At one point in the trailer, a friend asks, “Are we talking about heroin? Are we doing this?”
In June 2018, Demi released the song Sober, revealing she had relapsed after six years of sobriety. Just a month later, she was rushed to hospital after overdosing – reportedly on opioids. She was hospitalised for two weeks, and then entered a rehab facility.
Demi has said of the documentary, “It’s been two years since I came face-to-face with the darkest point in my life, and now I’m ready to share my story with the world.” ■
