‘I just didn’t want to be alive any more’

Her mental health struggles revealed

-

In a two-hour chat full of revelations, it was Meghan’s comments on her mental health that resonated most deeply with the viewing public. Speaking about her time in “the firm”, Meghan won praise for being open about her struggles as she tried to adapt to royal life. “I was really ashamed to say it at the time and ashamed to have to admit it,” Meghan told Oprah, as she spoke about having suicidal thoughts while she was pregnant and working as a senior royal. “But I knew that if I didn’t say it, that I would do it – I just didn’t want to be alive any more. And that was a very clear and real and frightening constant thought.” Meghan then recounted the moment she says she was rebuffed when she asked for help, claiming senior members of the household had told her it “wouldn’t be good for the institution”.

“I went to one of the most senior people to get help,” she said. “And I share this because there are so many people who are afraid to voice that they need help, and I know how hard it is to not just voice it, but to be told no… This wasn’t a choice, this was emails and begging for help, saying very specifically, ‘I am concerned for my mental welfare’… Nothing was ever done.”

The Duchess has since been commended for opening up in such a raw way, and many on social media said she has helped end the taboo around mental ill health. Paul Farmer, chief executive of mental health charity Mind, said last week that Meghan’s comments “would inspire others” to also seek help. “We recognise the importance of the Duchess of Sussex sharing her mental health experiences,” he said. “Too often, feelings of shame and isolation mean people affected by mental health problems go without the help and support they need and deserve.” n If you have been affected by this story, you can call the Samaritans on 116 123 or visit Samaritans.org
