Cornwell clinches club’s Kilmahew Trophy
ROBERT CORNWELL skipped his rink to victory in the final of Cardross Curling Club’s principal competition of the season, the Kilmahew Trophy.
Robert held a points advantage over his opponent Alistair MacLeod going into the final tie, and knew that if he peeled or won the match he would secure the trophy for a second time.
And along with team-mates Ewen Baird at third, David Shanks at two and lead Margaret Morrison, Robert got off to the perfect start, accumulating a six-shot advantage after winning the first four ends.
Though Alistair’s rink hit back to win the three ends that followed, Robert and his team-mates finished with a three in the eighth and final end to finish comfortable winners by nine shots to three.
Meanwhile, there was more cause for celebration among the curlers of Cardross after they won the Brownlie Shield in their annual match against local rivals Dumbarton.
Two teams from each club competed, with the winner being the one with the best ‘shots up’ score over the two games, and after four ends it looked like the trophy was heading to Dumbarton, who held a cumulative 10-shot lead.
Cardross, though, edged back into the match, with Adam Clark’s rink playing a particularly important role by turning around a six-shot deficit to win by three shots.
Dumbarton won the second game, also by a three-shot margin, but with Cardross having won more of the ends played it was they who were declared the winners, taking home a trophy that was presented in 1954 and has since been competed for every year by the two clubs.
