Get the taste for an orchestra!

-

A GROUP of Helensburgh musicians is to hold a series of taster sessions to give local residents the opportunity to try out playing in an orchestra and the first one is this weekend.

The six sessions are being organised by the Lomond and Clyde Community Orchestra, which rehearses in the town every Saturday morning and has a regular programme of concerts throughout the year.

The orchestra, whose most recent concert took place at the Victoria Halls on March 23, is now looking to recruit new members to its ranks, with only two requirements for new players: (1) that you have your own musical instrument, and (2) that you’re able to read music.

It’s hoping to attract players who are learning an instrument and would like to try being part of a group, as well as people who perhaps played years ago and would like to give it a try again.

The ethos of the orchestra, which was established as the ‘Saturday Orchestra’ way back in 1977, is to make music accessible to anyone and everyone, with its choice of music spanning film, musical and classical works that are challenging to players but still enjoyable to play.

It has a professional conductor, Moira FrizeWilliams, as well as the services of sectional music tutors, and is run by a committee of volunteers - though there’s always room for more helpers!

There’s no audition, and the sessions are open to players of all ages from 10 years and up. The first one takes place this Saturday, April 13, with further sessions on April 20 and 27 and on May 11, 18 and 25.

All take place between 10am and 12 noon at the orchestra’s regular rehearsal venue, St Michael’s Church Hall in William Street.
