Police called after fight in town centre supermarket

-

POLICE were called as a fight broke out in a town centre branch of Lidl supermarket.

Shocked members of the public reported seeing young men leaping over tills, shouting, swearing and grappling with security staff. The incident appeared to have started inside the Victoria Square Lidl in Paignton but it then spilled out into the pedestrianised area. In the confusion a 15-year-old youth suffered what appeared to be a seizure and had to be taken to hospital.

Police said they were called just after 6pm on Friday by members of the public who were concerned about a group of youths grappling with security staff. There was an incident involving security staff and an 18-year-old who has previously been banned from entering the store for shoplifting,” the police spokesman said. “While this was happening it appears a 15-year-old boy suffered what appeared to be a seizure and had to be taken to A&E by a member of his family. Police have spoken to all involved. No further action has been taken.”

A member of the public who witnessed the incident said: “It was scary for the people who were there at the time.

“There was a whole group of them running riot and they were jumping over the tills and there were fists flying everywhere. It’s a wonder nobody got hut. The security guard only managed to grab hold of one of them and the others got away.

“The language was atrocious – it was as bad as it can get.”
