- BY ABBIE BRAY

KIND-hearted people of Torbay have rallied around to help a Paignton family who lost everything in a house fire on Sunday.

Six fire engines were called along with police and an ambulance to Colley End Park at 3.37pm on Sunday, September 16, following reports of smoke billowing from a house.

A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire Service confirmed the fire started in a tumble dryer in the kitchen at the back of the house.

Following the fire, St Mary Magdalene Church has set up a Gofundme Page to raise money to help the Williams family who lost the majority of their belongings during the incid- ent.

The Reverend Sam Leach, who officially starts his post at the church this evening, said the response from the people of Torbay had been amazing.

“Stella and Ed Williams are long-standing active members of the church and they are a lovely family and involved with lots of things,” he said. “Stella was leading the service yesterday morning and they went out shopping in the afternoon when the fire started.

“Their 12-year-old son Joshua raised the alarm by telling neighbours and the fire service. The response has been amazing. Even by midday today there were clothes, bedding, food and soft toys.

“It is really gratifying to see the Torbay area giving, putting faith in Jesus into action, being

The Colley family, who lost everything in a fire which devastated their home generous and loving and looking after people.

“The best thing is that no one has been hurt and we are grateful for that.”

The church has also started a collection where members of the community can donate items such as clothing, food and toiletries.

The Gofundme Page reads: “The Williams family of Paignton suffered a devastating house fire on September 16.

HMS Magpie arrives in Dartmouth Fortunately everyone is ok, but the family has lost everything.

“Your love and support is deeply appreciated. To begin with, the family will need funds for their three young children and to get their household set up again.

“We are also saving for their first few months’ rent when they do find a new residence.

“St Mags is also collecting sealed food stores, toiletries and clothing for the family.

“Currently the Williams family is living day to day with very little and with no assurance for long term residence.

“Every little bit helps.”

So far the Gofundme Page has raised more than £2,000 out of its £10,000 target.

If you wish to donate any items of clothing or food, please get in touch with St Mary Magdalene church at office@stmags.org.uk to find out what the family needs.
