Caring charity marks 40 years

-

ONE of South Devon’s best-known charities is hoping to track down founder members to join its 40th anniversary celebrations tomorrow.

Brixham Does Care was originally set up as the Brixham Befrienders by Joyce Wooley-Lane in her home in Furzeham with the help of her husband, Lt.Col. Philip Wooley Lane, who is believed to have been a veteran of Dunkirk in WWII, and it has since gone from strength to strength.

But the problems of 40 years ago are little changed, according to Emma Barton, director of Brixham Does Care.

She said: “They recognised then that there were people who were isolated and lonely and that is the same today.

“They faced many of the same issues as we do, finding funding, rent increases and looking for more volunteers. Same problems, different times.

“BDC’s initial concept was to help people who are lonely and their aim was achieved and still is today.

“However, over the last 40 years we have been helping and supporting not only those who are lonely but also those of any age who are vulnerable or need help. Being a needs-led charity we have changed and adapted over the years.

“We often deal with extremely complex needs and we provide an excellent service due to having extensive knowledge amongst the staff.”

She said BDC was very fortunate to work with Torbay and South Devon NHS Trust, Age UK and as partners in the Aging Well project.

In addition, BDC and the Hospital League of Friends have come together on a new project called The Friends Centre.

Emma went on: “Although Joyce and Phillip are no longer with us, it is hoped that other founder members will come forward on Thursday at the Scala Hall from 11 am until 3pm.” If you are or know one of the founders contact Emma on 01803 857727.
