Revival plan for ‘ lost’ Wakefield station unveiled

ENTHUSIAST­Shave launcheda schemeto revivetheH­ull& Barnsley Railway’s Upton& North Elmsall station nearWakefi­eld.

TheUpton& North Elmsall Railway group was set up on May 24with the specific aim to rebuild the demolished station that will act as a heritage centre, cafe and shop with displays about Upton Colliery, which was servedby the line. A single track from a newly- built locomotive and carriage shed is proposed to run 2 ½ miles through Upton Country Park, Wrangbrook­e Junction and Barnsdale Tunnel, before terminatin­g at a new halt just before the A1 dual carriagewa­y at Barnsdale Bar, and will be used by steamtrain­s.

The 80- member group also plans to lay a footpath and cycleway alongside the railway and hopes to obtain grant aid from the National LotteryHer­itage Fund and other bodies.

The station last sawpasseng­ers in 1932 and the line closed in 1959.
