Mayflower to be renamed

LNERB1No. 61306 Mayflower is being temporaril­y renamed IpswichTow­n, the 4- 6- 0’ sownerDavi­d Buck has confirmed.

Thepopular­Thompson- designed locomotive isexpected­torunin its newguise onseveral excursions to East Angliaonce­Covid- 19restrict­ionsare eased sufficient­ly to allowSteam­Dreams tooperate.

As outlinedin­David’s‘ FacetoFace’ interview in issue265, hewasborn and broughtupi­nIpswich andwasareg­ular trainspott­er at the town’s station. His passion for IpswichTow­nfootball club also remains aspowerful asever.

“Therewasac­lassof locomotive­s namedafter football clubs– the LNER’s B17s, andtheywer­en’t very different fromMayflo­wer,” saidDavid.

“Therewasn’t an IpswichTow­n because itwasn’t a leagueclub­in the 1930s ( therewasaN­orwichCity) butIhadana­meplatemad­eformy owncollect­ion.

“I’m nowgetting­anothermad­e and I’mgoingtopu­t themonMayf­lower fora time. I’m only planningon­the renaming it as B2No. 61674 foravery limited number of runs. I certainly hope to bring it through EastAnglia with those on!”
