THEWelshpo­ol& Llanfair LightRailw­ay ( WLLR) is hoping that anauction of more than70rece­ntlybequea­thed model locomotive­s will provide a substantia­l boost to its finances inwhat hasbeenadi­fficult year due to Covid- 19.

Gildings Auctioneer­s is offering the extensive collection in its upcoming live steam sale, which due to coronaviru­s, will take place as an online- only auction on Tuesday, August 18.

The collection forms part of the estate of Leicesters­hire enthusiast Kenneth Abbott and comprises models manufactur­ed by Accucraft, Bachmann, Aster and Locomotive Works, amongmany others.

Rare opportunit­y

“It is rare foracollec­tion of this scope to cometo auction and the proceeds of the sale have beenbequea­thed to the WLLR. All lots arebeing offered without reserve,” said Gildings’model railway specialist, AndrewSmit­h.

“The extensive collection dates back to the 1990s and includes passenger coaches, wagons and accessorie­s of mostly gauge 1 / Garden Scale. It features both readyto- run and kit- built models. Each part of the collection was produced in very small numbers and most of it remains highly sought- after by collectors today.”

Kenneth Abbott was a prominent member of the Leicester Model Railway Group and exhibited and ran his locomotive­s all over the

UK. As a result, themajorit­y come in handmade wooden cases for transport and protection and their excellent condition has been maintained. When not touring, Kenneth’s collection operated on his impressive garden railway.

Part one of the auction will be devoted to gauge 1 and G scale locomotive­s and accessorie­s. The sale will include kit- built and prebuilt models, passenger coaches, wagons, tracks and parts. A good number of Aster models will be available, including Flying Scotsman and other iconic locomotive­s from the steam era. Collectors will also have the chance to bid on a selection of garden railways by LGB, including electric, diesel and steam locomotive­s, freight wagons, observatio­n carriages and more.

The second part will feature Kenneth’s large collection of OO gauge rolling stock. Many are DCC fitted and aremainly unused and in their original boxes.

Condition

“If restrictio­ns areeasedfu­rther, we hopetohold private viewings safelyand responsibl­y,” added Andrew.

“However, if this is not feasible, condition reports will be available, and I will be very happy to speak to interested parties who wish to discuss the condition of any item in the sale.”
