Pupils tour construction site
PUPILS donned hard hats and hi vis when they were taken on a tour of a town centre construction site.
The youngsters from St Mary’s Primary School visited the nearby retirement complex development Churchmead Court which is taking shape on the former vicarage grounds.
The schoolchildren were invited by award-winning retirement developer, McCarthy and Stone, to help educate them about the importance of safety when in and around building sites.
Accompanied by Andy Sampson, Hinckley construction site manager, the children, aged between nine and 11, were taken on a tour with their teachers and thoroughly enjoyed seeing all of the diggers and cranes close up.
The children took part in various construction-related activities, including dressing up in protective clothing, helmets and goggles, and learning about the dangers construction sites pose despite them often looking like the perfect adventure playground.
Andy said: “At McCarthy and Stone, health and safety is always at the forefront of all our minds. A number of the children at St Mary’s Church of England Primary School live near the site, and it is paramount that they understand how to stay safe in the community. It was wonderful to be able to welcome the children to Churchmead Court to take a look at the machinery and show them how great it is to work on a construction site – perhaps it will even act as an incentive for some of them to consider construction as a career when they’re older.”
The forthcoming development will comprise a stylish collection of 40 one and two bedroom retirement living apartments aimed exclusively at the over 60s.
