Dad scoops place in top US triathlon

-

A DAD from Earl Shilton is to swim through shark-infested waters as part of a prestigious American triathlon.

Antony Sayers is one of 200 Europeans to scoop a place in the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon on June 12.

The world renowned event involves a one-and-a-half mile swim from Alcatraz Island to the San Francisco shoreline, an 18 mile bike ride, followed by an eight mile run, which includes a notorious climb dubbed the “sand ladder”.

The race is capped at 2,000 competitors, with 1,800 spots given to US citizens and just 200 to Europeans, which are handed out lottery style.

The 43-year-old said: “I’m absolutely stoked to even get a spot in the momentous event - I’m incredibly lucky.

“It’s really difficult for people in Europe to get a place, I know people who have been trying for years.”

The dad-of-two, from New Street, Earl Shilton, has also raised £800 for Rainbows Children’s Hospice and is hoping to top the £1,000 mark.

Last year he completed a 140-mile Mallorca Ironman challenge in temperatures topping 28 degrees Centigrade.

He said: “This triathlon shouldn’t be anywhere near as tough as the Ironman, but I’m sure it will still be a challenge.

“I retired my running shoes and enjoyed a few packets of crisps for a while after the Ironman, but I’ve been training hard since and I soon got my fitness back.

“The swim will be the most difficult part I think due to the waves and tide.

“But my plan is to swim in the middle of the group so the sharks don’t get me first.”

After the race, the judoka will travel across the west coast with his wife and two children.
