Thousands raised for club’s paralysed player

-

A SQUASH club has raised more than £12,000 for a member who was left partially paralysed in a freak accident.

Mark Langeveld lost the use of his legs after bending over to pick up a piece of paper last May.

The Hinckley father-oftwo suffered a severe intervertebral disc herniation and spent 17 weeks in hospital recovering.

The former team captain now relies on a wheelchair to move.

Hinckley Squash and Racketball Club rallied around to buy a specially adapted wheelchair so he can continue playing the sport he loves.

Mark, a former public sector worker, said: “Being an active sportsman, continuing with sport is very important to me, both physically and psychologically. So being able to play sport competitively again, albeit now in a wheelchair, is massive.”

The club smashed its £5,000 target and raised £12,402 with the help of The Hinckley and Burbage Lions Club.

Some of the spare cash will be donated to the two spinal injury charities which helped with his recovery.

The cheque was presented to Mark by Robin Wilson from Hinckley and Burbage Lions Club at a presentation evening.

Mark thanked everyone for their support and even managed to take a few steps to collect his cheque.
