Overnight closures due to roadworks

Busy motorway junction

OVERNIGHT closures are scheduled for a busy motorway junction as part of a scheme to improve journey times.

Resurfacing work on a stretch of the A511 at the roundabout with the A50 at Markfield saw its final phase start on Monday June 13.

For four weeks, excluding weekends, work to resurface the roundabout will be carried out overnight with closures from 8pm to 6am.

To reduce disruption to motorists the roundabout will be resurfaced in two stages, with work starting on the north half coming first.

Monday to Friday up to June 24 the north side of the roundabout will be shut with diversions for traffic travelling from Coalville to Leicester.

Then from Monday June 27 to Friday July 8 the south side of the roundabout will close with diversions for traffic travelling from Leicester to Coalville.

The entry and exit slip roads at Junction 22 of the M1 will also be impacted by the work and will have to be closed and diversion routes signed.

Local diversion routes will be clearly signed in advance. For motorists using the M1 southbound and wishing to leave at Junction 22, diversion routes will direct them down to Junction 21 of the motorway and then redirect north to Junction 21a. This diversion will take drivers through additional works along the M1, including a 50mph zone, but is the quickest and shortest route for motorists.

The scheme is being carried out to improve the capacity of the A511, particularly at its junction with the M1 to cater for increased levels of traffic expected from a growing economy, particularly across north west Leicestershire. The scheme should be completed by August.

The project is funded partly by a £2.54 million contribution provided through the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership’s Local Growth Deal, and is being managed by Leicestershire County Council.

Other improvement works include the placing of permanent traffic signals on the busiest four of the five approaches to the M1 Junction 22 roundabout and a 50mph speed limit in the run-up to the lights. The carriageway will also be widened in places to increase the number of approach lanes from two to three on the major routes.
