Diamond reunion for schoolpals

Call for former friends to get together

A SWING back to the 1970s is the ambition of a group of former Hinckley school pupils as they celebrate their diamond birthdays.

A reunion of the class which started in September 1970 is being organised by pals who remember with fondness their days at Hinckley Grammar School.

The event follows a similar get-together in 2002, some 30 years since the students took their exams, which attracted more than 200 people from all over the country and even the United States.

Valerie Brightmore (nee Nimmo), one of the organisers, said: “We are trying to spread the message to as many people as possible who started at Hinckley Grammar in September 1970 for this reunion which will see us all in our 60th year.

“I’m still in touch with some of my old school friends includ- ing my old best friend Maureen Higgs as was.

“We have a Facebook page but some people aren’t that computer savvy so we are trying to reach as many people in as many ways as possible.

“Ironically when we had the reunion in 2002 there was no Facebook so it was literally word of mouth and we had 200 or so people turn up.”

The reunion, being held in the old school hall at Butt Lane, Hinckley, kicks off from 7pm on Saturday June 25 with tickets costing £5 on the door. Proceeds will go to local charities to be determined by the attendants.

Valerie, well known at school as she had an identical twin sister, Patricia, added: “We are hoping people will bring along old photos from their school days and we can produce a power point presentation.

“We will also be having 1970s music thanks to Steve Brookes from Castle Mead Radio who is a real fan of the songs from that era.”
