Social media sites showcase local issues

NEW SOCIAL media accounts are encouraging people in Burbage to take a greater interest in local matters.

Resident Mike George has launched Democracy in Burbage on Twitter and Facebook to provide an independent source of information and news about the running of the parish.

It is hoped the regularly updated platforms will encourage residents to be more aware of what the parish council does, take part in consultations and pro-actively engage with the council.

While the sites have been launched with a long-term motive there are three current issues which are taking centre stage.

These are the election of a new parish councillor in July, the petition to review the Millennium Hall redevelopment and proposed changes in the St Catherine’s Church grounds.

The election has been prompted by the resignation of Councillor Dave Coulson who is leaving the area to move closer to his family.

Nominations for anyone who wants to fill the vacancy for Stretton ward need to be in by Friday June 24 and if the seat is contested polling will take place on Thursday July 21.

People are reminded they don’t need to be in a political party to put themselves forward as a parish councillor.

While the sites are independent of the parish council the intent is to actively encourage public interaction and make it easier for councillors and officials to reach a balanced decision based on what people want.

The issue of the Millennium Hall redevelopment is a prime example where the council has put forward a £500,000 plus scheme to make the building more user friendly for a wider section of the community.

It involves turning the current four changing rooms into hall space and relocating the sports facilities closer to the pitches Road.

However, a petition protesting about the proposal and calling for a rethink attracted 200 signatures.

It has led to the parish council once more reaching out to residents, with a spokesman saying: ”Feedback from the consultation round wasn’t overwhelming and council members are looking for a better understanding of the views of those who signed the petition.”

Anyone with comments is urged to contact the parish office via email at info@burbage-council. co.uk or call Hinckley 637533. on Britannia
