National honours for make-up student
GORY horror inspired make-up helped a student soar to glory in a national championships.
Michelle Holtham beat off stiff competition from across the country at the finals of the National Make-Up Awards held at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.
Michelle, who is studying a level 3 diploma in media make-up at North Warwickshire and Hinckley College’s Lower Bond Street campus picked up a total of five awards including the overall award for best student - screen/TV/simulation and first place in special effects category ‘simulation make-up’ and ‘simulation hair’.
This year’s theme was ‘underground train crash’ and students had to produce designs which were credible and believable, retaining clinical accuracy where possible.
The 19-year-old also picked up second place for ‘fantasy make-up’ and ‘fantasy hair’ which this year was to use prosthetics to design a look influenced by Star Wars.
Fellow student Toni Brotherhood also participated in both competitions.
Lucy Johnson, lecturer in make-up artistry at North Warwickshire and Hinckley College, said: “The National Make-Up Awards is a really prestigious contest and our students were up against competition from all over the UK. For Michelle to walk away with this many awards is a phenomenal achievement and will give her - and her fellow students - confidence ahead of other competitions during the academic year.”
