Talk on village life in a time of turmoil

-

A TALK on life in Sapcote between the wars is the next event in Hinckley and District Museum’s calendar.

The discussion will be led by guest speaker Keith Hextall, of the Sapcote Heritage Group.

Keith’s talk is based on an incredible set of circumstances that started from buying a miniature barrel from Sapcote on eBay. After learning more about its past, he realised its old owner had written down her life story, before distributing it to her children.

Remarkably, when his wife told the tale at the WI, a member informed her that this lady was in fact her aunt, and she also had a copy of the story.

It covers the life of the village through the eyes of a young girl, her working life, joining up to the war effort and marriage in her later life. Keith plans to nar- rate her story until the end of the war.

He said: “It just illustrates how it is still possible to come across a little gem of village life through a series of remarkable coincidences.

“Her maiden name was Elsie Mary Tansey and she was born in 1912. I will be bringing the barrel with me and will start the talk by saying that it ‘started with a barrel.’” It will take place in Cafe Espanol at the Atkins building and is free to members of the Friends of the Museum and £3 on the door for non members. Refreshments are available and there is free parking in the car park opposite the Atkins Building.

Details of the talks programme for the 2016 season can be seen on the museums website at www.hinckleydistrictmuseum. org.uk
