Disrespectful letter about the elderly taking Brexit blame

-

I FOUND the letter from Shyfox about the old influencing the referendum result very disrespectful.

In these days of non discrimination against any part of society, some of the terminology used was out of order. In fact the letter could be considered ageism.

It is unreasonable to blame the result of the referendum on old people.

When a huge majority in Hinckley and Bosworth voted to leave the EU how can the result be laid at the door of one particular generation?

I have many friends of a wide range of ages who voted to leave the EU.

The older ones made their choice not because they suffer dementia, or a don’t care attitude because they would soon be kicking up daisies.

They voted as they did because they had experienced this country outside the EU and without unelected officials in Brussels dictating our everyday life.

If it is felt they let down the young people’s future consider the following.

In Spain the under 25s experience 50% unemployment. There are similar stories in Italy and Portugal and if you consider the austerity imposed on Greece by Germany, it makes our cutbacks look insignificant.

We live in a huge world with trade available in emerging economies, something the EU would not allow us to go alone.

If we remained in Europe we would have been engulfed by the failing euro and sucked into ever increasing federalism. Where is the British spirit? We should talk the country up, Europe is not the be all in this global economy.

Why in this country can’t we respect other people’s opinions without using such words as dementia and doubting the old’s ability to read a newspaper without having their brains soaked? Old people have the ability to think rationally while holding true values. John Smith by email
