New vehicle for charity helping homeless

-

A NEW van has been bought for a Hinckley-based homeless charity with help from Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council.

Emmaus Leicestershire and Rutland has bought the new £15,000 vehicle with the help of a £3,900 grant from the council’s Community Initiative Fund.

The organisation, based on Ashby Road, helps 17 formerly homeless people by providing them with a home and work in a community setting. The van will enable charity’s members to collect more unwanted household goods from around the borough to be refurbished and sold at its emporium on Stockwell Head.

The charity also runs a pre-loved boutique on Castle Street.

Borough Councillor Jan Kirby, chairman of Hinckley Area Committee which awarded the grant to the organisation, and ward councillor, said: “I am very pleased that the new van will support the growth of Emmaus’s work in the Hinckley and Bosworth area.”

Emmaus Leicestershire and Rutland chief executive officer Mir Juma said: “The van will be used by our companions for collecting donations of furniture, clothing, electrical items and bric-a-brac for sale in Emmaus charity shops and delivery of sold items.

“Not only will this enable us to recycle more pre-loved goods for use by local households, it will also help to reduce goods being dumped in landfill sites and thus helping to reduce negative environmental impact.”
