Bartering for beer with Steamin’ Billy

-

GREEN-FINGERED allotment holders are trading their homegrown harvests for top tipples at a Hinckley pub.

The Railway on Station Road has teamed up with Blackways Meadow Allotment Society to barter beer for garden grown vegetables, fruits and flowers.

The move is to allow chefs at the Steamin’ Billy pub to add a selection of locally-produced dishes to its menu.

Manager Adam Crump said: “We are delighted to trade beer for the best of Hinckley’s harvested produce.

“The kitchen staff are impressed with the quality of ingredients supplied and it has allowed their creativity for great culinary dishes to flourish.

“Local gardeners also get a great sense of pride seeing their efforts and toil turned into fresh flavoursome meals.

“We hope to enlist more gardeners in the future to continue trading produce for pints of beer.”

Some of the special items on the menu include rhubarb crumbles and apple pies, as well as chutneys and red onion marmalade to accompany salads.

Bob Evans, founding member of the Burbage-based allotment society, said trading vegetables for beer can only be “good news”.

The society is looking for new members to manage a plot of land.
